Name: Juanjohn

Where: Laredo, Texas

Age: 19

Occupation: Alcohol enthusiast and (now) Occasional blogger

Interests: Shows, Drinking, Smoking, Computers, Conspiracies, College, Books, Agua de Melon and Mexico

Music: Everything and anything that sounds good. Seriously, try me.

This is my first blog ever, so I'm gonna try to stick to the point. We first came up with the phrase Eternal Summer when we graduated and realized that from that point on, since our lifestyles don't demand us to work our asses off, it will forever feel like an Eternal Summer. Well I can only speak for myself regarding that meaning, specifically. In this blog I would really like to just post the experiences of me and the people I share them with.

Some Music from Jahn.

Today I decided to post up one of my old playlists.
I would like to share this with the readers.

I hope you guys have a .7z extractor. Otheriwse, I think WinZip will do it for Windows.

Mac and Linux guys, you should know what to do.

Google hacked?

Yesterday, I did a whois on Google, and what I found was pretty crazy. . .

Google has a list of random servers linked to it's web page.

(click on the links to view images)

This was Sunday at 9:59pm.

This was last night at 11:17pm.

I don't think Google knows that they have a problem because the site is working normal.

Home-made Stickers

Editor's Note: I would recommend the use of posterboard/manilla folder for the stencil as it's much easier to cut, will result in a smoother design, and helps prevent underspray. Remember kids, x-acto knives/boxcutters are dangerous pieces of equipment, so practice proper safety to avoid injury.

An hour, 2 cans of spray paint 35 Priority mail label stickers, some tape, an old magazine, and a stencil cut out of a U.P.S box later...

The 8 looks bad, but I got my point across.

For laughs, this is my good friend, Blocker, ejecting my drunken uncle out of my room...

...and a video by a good band: The Icarus Line - Slayer

Ajay Enuf on DCXX pt.2

As some of you may recall, I posted up a demo from a late 80's NJ hardcore band by the name of Enuf. Well, DCXX has posted up part two of their ongoing interview with frontman and New Jersey's Hardest, Ajay Enuf. They talk about the band's beginnings, and Ajay remembers going to shows all over the place and old crew from back in the day.

Aside from the interview, they posted up some scans from the demo's insert. It wasn't in its entirety, but it was cool to see those that got posted. Much thanks to the DCXX crew.

You can check out the full size scans over at Double Cross.

Flipside Video Zine - Minor Threat

YouTube user batattak recently posted up a 3-part video of Minor Threat's part on what I believe was Volume 2 of the Flipside Video Magazines of the 1980's. Also featured on this release was SoCal punk legends, the Minutemen. It's a good quality rip, audio/video. If anyone has any other vids from the old Flipside Video Zines, get at me.

Here's the vids, with a total running time of 23 min and 14 sec.

Sakura Tattoo Parlor

When it comes to Laredo, Texas, there isn't really much to do around this town but get tattooed, get drunk, or go to your local high school party and, if you're lucky, get a young lady with all sorts of daddy issues and pass her around like '**** Bad News' with your fellow drunk friends. From buffets to hardcore shows, adderall, all nighters in Houston, TX, kicking pianos, and tears. I bring to YOU: Randy Alvarez. He's an up-and-coming tattoo artist from Laredo, TX working out of Sakura Tattoo Parlor. Make sure to check out his work, and, if you're in the area, get some work done by him!

Trial to play Chicago in '09

A message from Greg Bennick of Trial:
Yes...its true. I had a dozen texts today, and facebook and myspace messages about this show asking if it was rumor or real so I thought I might share what I know and then we'll all be on the same page.

I got an email from my friend Jim Grimes from Chicago yesterday....Jim has been doing hardcore shows in Chicago since the mid 1990's and is like the hardcore Al Capone of Chicago. Well, Tony Victory is more like the Al Capone of Chicago. Jim is like if Al Capone had a little brother, named like "Fletcher" or "Tupac" or "Brodie". Yeah...Brodie Capone.

So Brodie Capone writes me from Chicago and says that he is doing a show for Disembodied and Unbroken and that Undertow will likely play too if they can do it. He said its going to be in honor of Brian Petersen's new book "Burning Fight: The Nineties Hardcore Revolution in Ethics, Politics, Spirit and Sound" which is coming out on Revelation soon. I am excited to read this book when it comes out. Brian is completely sincere. Have no doubts. I talked to him a ton during the research phase of his book and he wanted to make it as accurate as he possibly could. He said that so many times that I eventually would just start to zone out a little when he started talking about it. I believed him 100%. He was preaching to the choir. I am sure people will talk behind his back that he forgot this or overemphasized that in his book. He didn't, and he won't. And if he does, he's the author, and thats his right. Please remember this though: if you decide to talk shit about Brian and his book, know that I will write to the voodoo dudes that I met in Haiti last month and have them wreak havoc on your world, just like in that movie 'Serpent and the Rainbow' (which if you haven't seen, you need to, especially if you are going to be an amateur book critic). Brian rules and his book will be great. Think about that, and about potentially spending the next 25 years as a zombie, BEFORE you decide to make fun of him.

Anyway...Undertow and Unbroken have been talking for awhile now about their two bands doing a San Diego show and a Seattle show together. I had heard rumor too about a Chicago show but I never knew any solid details other than hardcore message board talk. Not that I read the message boards. Gosh. Anyway, the email from Brodie Capone changed all that. He said that he wanted this Chicago show to be a show with 90's bands to support the book and he wanted Trial to play. I had no idea that he was promoting the Chicago show. I wrote to the guys (Timm had already talked to him) and they all said yes. Alexei actually said "fuck yes". EJ said something equally expressive, though slightly more articulate. And Brian, as to be expected, spouted off some insanity about wanting the Scorpions to play too, that he needed an entire hotel to himself, and that we should all wear witches hats onstage, or at the very least that I should wear a fez. Gotta love him.

So there you have it. You now know as much as I do:

Chicago, sometime in April 2009
Disembodied, Unbroken, Trial: all confirmed
Undertow possibly and hopefully confirming soon

Now we're all on the same page. See you there and keep in touch.

If all goes well, I will be in attendance. I really need to see Trial. They are one of my all-time favorite hardcore bands. Are These Our Lives? is just about perfect.

Who's gonna make plans to go?

Seizures In Barren Praise drops 11/11

Trap Them's "Seizures In Barren Praise" CD will arrive in stores on 11/11.
Vinyl will follow shortly thereafter...

Pre-ordering will be launched soon.

Once again engineered by Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios, "Seizures In Barren Praise" shows Trap Them at their most vicious. Having mastered their art of aural bludgeoning, the album musically rips, stomps, and claws forth with rabid emotion. All of this a fitting backdrop to Ryan Mckenney's lyrical stories of depression and pain.

"Barren Praise" is a fictional ghost town version of every non-fiction town" says McKenney. "Lyrically, previous Trap Them releases are all stories from people who had lived in "Barren Praise" before deciding to up and leave. This is the story of those who stayed behind to tell the stories of watching everything unfold..." states McKenney.

Upon listening, it's hard not to picture fragments of your own life as part of the chaotic debris that are these fictional lives. The friends, family, and faces of those that make up the ensemble cast of your own life are all there, indirectly. Making "Seizures In Barren Praise" a broken mirror into their world and your own, exposing every fear, weakness, and wound. All of it set to one of the heaviest and most punishing metallic soundtracks, ever.

Some Pictures....

I took these a few months back and messed with them while trying to learn how to "edit" last night.

...and this last picture was not really messed with but it's gold. It was taken on my little brother's birthday, which is nowhere near Halloween, but, as you can see, he is with Batman, himself, chillin' in mid May.

Enjoy.

New Killing Time in 2009

Legendary NYHC band, Killing Time, have released some info in regards to their new studio album to be released in in the coming year.

Killing Time is now in the studio recording our third full-length album appropriately named "Three Steps Back." The album is scheduled to be released in early 2009. The band started work on the album in January 2008 after returning from our tour of Japan and South Korea. To write the material, we decided to bring it back to where it all started—Drago’s parents’ garage, the place where Breakdown had formed and where the classic “Brightside” record had been written and rehearsed. We see “Three Steps Back” as both a return to the band’s roots and a new vision of what a classic hardcore band can still accomplish. We think that these twelve news songs bring New York Hardcore back to its punk beginnings while still offering up that classic Killing Time crunch and power.

Internal Affairs calling it a night...

"6 years, 17 countries, and countless shows.

The road for Internal Affairs is coming to an end. This band has been so amazing for the 5 of us, and we are so thankful for everyone who has been apart of it. We have met some of the most incredible friends from around the world thanks to I.A. We have decided to call it quits. No need for a long ridiculous explanation other than we feel it is time to move on. Thanks for your support over the years. Special thanks to: Malfunction Records, Triumvir, Resist Records, Deathwish Inc., Not Just Words Records, 530 Records, Avocado Booking, Crime Scene Merch, Icon Screen Printing, TDT Screen Printing, Untied Print & Press, Tim Oswald, LAHC and everyone who has toured with us, fed us, or provided us a place to stay.

Unfortunately we have to cancel the European tour due to the sudden decision.
As for a last show, something will be announced shortly.

News on final shows will be announced shortly, as well as some other stuff to keep an eye out for...

Goddamn the 21st Century

In June 2008, DEAD CITY entered the studio with Barry Poynter (Zao, Living Sacrifice) in Little Rock, AR, to record a twelve track, full length LP. The result is “Goddamn The 21st Century,” a richly textured album that truly encapsulates the viciousness and desperation of their songs. Having been mastered this week by Larry and Kevin Nix at legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis TN, DEAD CITY had made 3 tracks available for listening on their myspace. The band is currently shopping the project for a 2009 release. Any interested parties should get in touch with Jeremiah or via Myspace.com.

Find a path in the darkness...

...out of this purgatory.

Texas' hardest return in 2008 with their self-titled 7" EP on Malfunction/Deathwish. It features 3 brand new tracks of devastating hardcore. One of which, Purgatory, having been previously released on the Deathwish Summer Sampler 2k8 to mixed reviews. It must have been hard to go back into the studio after the release of their highly acclaimed full-length, Climate of Fear, but it just seems to come natural for Bitter End to bust out some of today's best hardcore.

One thing a lot of listeners will notice about this record is that the band opted to go with longer songs that are a lot more polished and technically tight, as opposed to being shorter and more raw as with their first EP. With each release, songs seem to have gotten longer and more dynamic. If you looked at the numbers, Mind in Chains averaged 2 minutes/song and Climate of Fear hit 3 min/song. This new EP may only be 3 tracks, but it'll take you 11.4 minutes to get through listening. That being, if you can handle hardcore of this magnitude. Texas doesn't fuck around.

The EP kicks off in the Introduction with a pulsing, almost hypnotic groove into some heavy riffage. It closes out with everything coming together over a pounding beat with double bass to spare and leads you right into the next track. Purgatory hits going full speed ahead with raging riffs, and Daniel's signature vocal assault takes you in as he contemplates life, existence, purpose and consequence. They seem to have drawn a lot more from the thrash metal bands of the 80's which, for me, is a great thing! Not to mention we get to hear guitarist, Griff, do more vocal work throughout this track. Dude really needs to front a band. Yo Griff, what's up with Circle of Pain?! Anyway, back to Purgatory. After all the raging has been said and done, it closes out with a monstrous break which falls right into Power Struggle. Using more melody, similar to the Introduction, than the previous track, this song sounds straight outta 1987. That's not to say Bitter End is a total throwback with no originality. Far from it, actually. They simply chose some great influences and made it their own. Churning out riff after riff, these dudes bring you some viciously intense hardcore. This EP sounds like outtakes from Climate of Fear, just heavier. It's definitely going to be one of the top EPs of this year.

The pre-orders have already shipped from the Malfunction/Deathwish camp, and people have already started to recieve them in the mail. If you missed pre-orders, be sure to go in to your nearest record store/distro and pick it up. You can also head on over to the Deathwish eStore to get it.

Now feel the wrath of those you burned.

War Hungry News

A message from War Hungry:
"HEY

We just posted another track from our Return To Earth EP. It's been over a year since we released the record and we still don't have any new music for you (...yet), so "Spoken Through The Serpent" is now available for download.

We recently finished a US Tour this summer with our good friends in Let Down and Swamp Thing. Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows and our apologies to those who we missed due to the canceled dates. We'll make it your way one of these days.

We're in the process of getting the LP together. Unfortunately, you won't be hearing anything until 2009. I swear it'll be worth it.

Catch us on select East Coast shows of the Trash Talk/Alpha & Omega US Tour this October. Dates will be posted soon."

Another new VX song posted!

Vitamin X just posted up a new track off the upcoming LP, Full Scale Assault, called Deal With It.

peep game.

Full Scale Assault

The artwork has been released for the upcoming LP from Dutch ragers, Vitamin X, entitled, "Full Scale Assault." You can also listen to the title track on the TankCrimes MySpace profile. This record is definitely going to be one of my favorite releases of 2008.

The cover was done by the amazing John Dyer Baizley, who has done art for tons of great bands such as Pig Destroyer, Torche, Skeletonwitch, and his own band, Baroness.

The album drops soon. I'll keep you posted.
