No Harm Done/Offsides Split EP

Melodic hardcore has been on a downturn as of late, but from time to time a record comes along that is just so chock full of melody and hooks while maintaining that hardcore punk aggression, it makes you say, "Good times, full speed ahead." This is one of those records. A joint production from Seafoam Recordings and In My Heart Records, Florida's No Harm Done and Connecticut's Offsides find themselves on their own respective sides of this solid piece of wax. 6 songs of fast-paced, melodic hardcore. My old band played with No Harm Done down in Laredo, TX sometime in 2008, and some of the NHD dudes kept yelling for us to do a Buried Alive cover. Unfortunately, at the time, we didn't know any Buried Alive, but BA is def backed hard, and so No Harm Done is backed. haha. They play a good mix of fast pop-punk and hardcore. They have a real fun live show. Lots of energy. This is actually my first time hearing Offsides, but I always enjoy when bands have female vocalists. They also had an EP come out on Get Outta Town Records last summer. I still need to check that out, but these 3 songs made a good impression on me for this band. Solid aggressive melodic hardcore. Be sure to pick up this split 7" and catch both bands on tour together as they go across the US and Canada.

ffo: Kid Dynamite, Kill Your Idols, Hot Water Music, Good Riddance
notable tracks: Dangerous Years, Gone

No Harm Done:
1. Dangerous Years
2. Vs Vultures
3. GoodBye

Offsides:
1. Vacant Lots
2. Gone
3. With Great Honor

Killer Ape will go for about a week er so before splitting off in Las Vegas and heading back to Texas as Grave Robbers continue on for another week or two.

NEW PRIDE KILLS SONGS

Houston hardcore heavyweights, PRIDE KILLS, have posted up a track of some new songs they've been jamming on their MySpace. They have been at the forefront of Houston, and Texas, hardcore since their start in 2002, and even though they had come to, what seemed to be, a definite hiatus, things have been stirring up around the PK camp, and believe me when I say that I couldn't be happier.

LIFE OF HATE

5q: A.H. of Take Offense

5 questions with A.H. of Chula Vista hardcore band, Take Offense. Discusses their upcoming 2 song 7", Suicidal Tendencies, CVHC, S&F '09, and the possibility of touring from the T.O. camp. Dig it.

New record, Happiness Under Chains. What's the word?

Well we had other plans for these songs, but that project sort of fell though, at least for now. So instead of letting these songs linger around we just decided to do a 2 song 7". Our friend Colin Tappe of Life's a Rape Records decided to release it for us, needless to say we are pleased. We're trying to get it together as quickly as possible and plan on having it out by this years Sound & Fury fest being held in Oxnard. So keep your eye's peeled for this one!

Join the Army or How Will I Laugh Tomorrow...?

Being a huge ST fan, I love both records. But I'm gonna have to go with How will I laugh Tomorrow... The production is obviously a lot better and the lyrics just really get to me. If the songs 'War Inside My Head' and 'A Little Each Day' were on that album instead it would be perfection.

Chula Vista Hardcore. Lots of good bands on the ups. What're some bands of worth that we should be lookin' out for?

There are a handful that will be doing a lot of great things in the future. My current favorite would had to be a band called Deadlined. Great guys that definitely know what they're doing. We also got Impulse, def for fans of Black Flag, Infest, SSD. Tantive IV & Stopping Power are also two other CV bands that are starting to come up which is really cool. My other band Down Again is trying to get it's shit together right now. We've been playing shows here and there and writing new material, so hopefully you'll be hearing some new stuff from us in the near future.

Sound and Fury '09. Stoked? What bands are you most excited to be sharing the stage with?

We are definitely very happy that we're playing this year. I've attended each one since '06 and I have a feeling this will be the best year since that one. Last year I sort of had an altercation with the people running that thing but that's cleared up for the most part which I am glad because I don't want there to be any problems this year. We're only playing for one reason and that's because I straight up just love hardcore, it's one of the very few things that make me happy in my life and I feel I need people to hear my music and listen to what I have to say. So we are pleased and plan on having a great time. There is a good handful of bands that I am looking forward to see. Here's a short list off the top of my head; Trapped Under Ice, Bad Seed, Floorpunch, Power Trip, Violation, Downpresser, Creatures, Alpha&Omega. I know there are more but you get the idea.

Touring? Any plans to hit the road in the near future?

I know we all desperately want to, it's just a matter of getting organized and saving up some cash. Hopefully we'll get something together towards the end of the year. But we'll see what's up!

That's it for now. I'm gonna try to get at least one of these mini-interviews up as often as I can. Take Offense has one of the new songs up on their myspace. Make sure to check that out. Happiness Under Chains.

New Scheme Video, Chicano

Chicago based rapper, Scheme, has released a new video for the track, Chicano, off his upcoming EP, The Manifesto. The video was done by the guys at CineDeLaredo.com. Filmed in both Laredo, TX and Nuevo Laredo, Tamps, Mex, it features lyrics and images that are very representative of Chicano life [no shit, huh? haha]. This dude goes from the heart, and I can def feel where he's comin' from, being a Chicano, myself.

Ruckus post song, "Purge"

Los Angeles hardcore band, Ruckus, have posted another song on their MySpace off of their full-length, Human Pollution, which was released earlier this year through BDHW of Germany. The song, Purge, shows the band's faster side while still mainting that hard style. Fools die.

Killer Ape will have the honor of playing alongside these guys at this year's GrownFest on August 8th in Los Angeles. There will be blood.

Paranoid Mess - new Government Warning

The boys in the Government Warning camp have released 3 new tracks on their MySpace off of their upcoming 15-song LP, Paranoid Mess, which is being put out by No Way/Grave Mistake Records in the US and La Vida Es Un Mus Records in Europe. The record should be available around time for No Way Fest 3. After listening to these new tracks a whole bunch, I think it's safe to say that this record is going to fucking rule, and I really hope they tour the US and come to Texas after the record drops.

HATE5SIX @ Burning Fight

A repost from Hate5Six in regard to videos of bands that performed at Burning Fight this past weekend:

After a 15 hour drive home, a towed car, and a speeding ticket, my friends and I finally made it home. This weekend I was privileged to cover the Burning Fight book release show in its entirety. This was a once in a lifetime experience and opportunity and I would like to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who made it all possible. Congratulations to Brian Peterson for completing his written documentation of the 90's hardcore landscape and thanks to Jim Grimes and Caitlin Lipinski for all their hard work. I'd like to send a special thank-you to Caitlin for answering all of my pestering e-mails and for not strangling me this weekend; I can't even begin to think how much of a nuisance I was to her.

The goals of this DIY project of mine have always been:

1. Deliver the highest quality live videos
2. Share all footage in its entirety
3. Publish videos as quickly possible

I believed Burning Fight needed to be covered in this manner. For the thousands of people unable to attend, and for those who were fortunate enough to be there, I wanted capture everything and deliver it while the excitement and passion from the event was still palpable. I am generally very thorough in terms of presenting my work (proper titles, setlists, etc), but in the interest of getting the footage out there as quickly as possible, I've decided to release all the footage in three phases:

Phase 1: Each set will be posted as raw footage with little or no editing/labeling. I'd hate to keep people waiting to see the footage solely because I'm attempting to satiate my anal retentive standards.

Phase 2: Each set will be edited and properly parsed/labeled. Videos in this phase will also be dubbed over with audio from the soundboard. Many thanks to Mike Gan for sharing the audio and Rusty Aggacid for manning the soundboard all weekend. Mike and/or I will also be sharing the audio source for anyone who is interested. Soundboard audio was captured for Ringworm, Guilt, Underdog, 108, Killing Time, Trial, Disembodied, Harm's Way, The Killer, Blacklisted, Have Heart, Threadbare, Split Lip, Reach the Sky, Bane, Converge, and Unbroken.

Phase 3: Each set will be available, in its entirety, for free download. I plan on spending a considerable amount of time determining the best way to achieve this. More on this to come...

How Can You Help?

I will need a lot of help with this...

1. I ask that everyone be patient as I work to get this all up. Roughly speaking, an hour's worth of video takes an hour to transfer, approximately 2-3 hours to encode, and a very long time to upload (this is just for Phase 1, too). There were 22 bands this weekend (all with varying set lengths) so this will take some time. My plan is to have at least 1 set up each day (possibly more on the weekends starting some time this week). The order in which the footage will be released is undetermined. The mathematician inside me is wanting to use a random number generator; any other order would presumably cause people's heads to explode due to anticipation.

2. My overall knowledge of the setlists is incomplete. Some bands provided setlists to me, some bands said the names of the songs during the set, and others played stuff I never heard before. If you're familiar with a band's catalog to the point where you can identify every song they played (hell, if you're in the band), please contact me (hate5sixproductions@gmail.com). This will expedite Phase 2 and Phase 3 considerably. As you're watching the sets, just note the name of the song and the approximate time stamp. I'm sure I can figure it all out myself, but there are just way too many gaps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

3. Please don't request a DVD of the show. I feel bad saying no to the numerous requests I've received about this, but at this time I cannot grant such requests for a myriad of reasons. As I said above, I will make everything available for free download during Phase 3.

This is going to be a long project, but it will be undeniably well worth the wait. I appreciate everyone's patience in advance and I assure you every song from every band will see the light of day in the relative near future. As Jim Grimes said before Unbroken, "this is your show." Thanks again to everyone who made this weekend unforgettable: from the organizers to the bands to the amazing people I met to everyone who donated money for tapes--you are the reasons why I love hardcore.

Please repost this message everywhere you can in its entirety. Follow me on Twitter for updates and progress reports: twitter.com/hate5six

TRIAL at Burning Fight: FML

So, due to the fact that I decided to move at the entirely wrong time, I ended up selling my tickets to Burning Fight because it would not have been in my best interest to be spending so much money on the trip...in retrospect, I made a BIG mistake. I would have survived being broke for a little while, and I would not have missed, what looks to be, one of the best sets in recent memory.

FUCK MY LIFE.

New Label: Cyclopean Records

A new label has emerged, headed by Jason Tarpey of Iron Age fame, that will be releasing Iron Age's highly-anticipated, second full-length, The Sleeping Eye. CYCLOPEAN RECORDS, as it is called, will also be releasing the upcoming Mammoth Grinder LP, Extinction of Humanity, which has a tentative release date of July 1st. The Sleeping Eye 2xLP will be available through the Cyclopean online store as of May 11th.

Living Hell 2009

This fan made video has been making its way across the internet to promote the upcoming full-length record from Living Hell, one of IGN.com's 10 Must Hear Hardcore Bands. The record, Oblivion, will be their debut release with Eulogy Recordings. The song featured in the video, Leviathan, is "unmixed, unfinished and unmastered."

Fire & Ice

New band causin' a stir outta Richmond, Virginia. Features some heads from Iron Boots and Bracewar. Two rough demo tracks are up on a MySpace. Def diggin' these jams. Proper demo should be coming our way soon. In the meantime, peep the song, Gods and Devils.

Eternal Summer in Austin [part 2]

So I didn't come through with updates by early February, but I promise, things will start to pick up again. As of late, I've just been adjusting to life here in Austin. I scored a warehouse job in the southside, and I'm working 40+ hours a week. I'm probably going to start making shorter posts to make up for the difference in how much free time I have now as opposed to when I was in Laredo working my lax-as-fuck office job; nowhere near a computer throughout most of my days now.

I'm jamming with a good bunch of dudes from around this great state in a band called Killer Ape. We listen to Merauder and Crowbar. A lot. We've got a demo recorded already. You can check that out on MySpace. We'll have some shirts and hard copies of the demo available at upcoming shows. If all goes well, we should be hitting up the west coast around late July/early August and playing Grownfest 3!

Also, if you have never done so, check out my boy, Tremblay, from Montreal's blog/zine, LIFERS. Peep game.

Eternal Summer in Austin

As some of you may have already noticed, there has been a major lack of updates as of late. I am currently in the process of moving up to Austin, TX. Updates should start back up regularly come early February.

In the mean time, here's a promotional video for the new Iron Age record, The Sleeping Eye. Looks to be one of the best of 2009.
