Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box

"Metal Box is the second album by Public Image Ltd., released in 1979 by Virgin Records.

The title refers to the album's original packaging, which consists of a metal 16mm film canister embossed with the band's logo and containing three 12" records. The album was reissued in 1980 as a double album titled Second Edition.

A radical departure from Pil's relatively conventional debut, the avant garde, abstract Metal Box was characterized by singer John Lydon's cryptic vocals, Jah Wobble's propulsive dub reggae-inspired basslines, and a unique, "metallic" guitar sound (guitarist Keith Levene played Travis Bean guitars which have aluminum necks). Metal Box is widely regarded as a landmark of post punk and experimental rock: In 2002, Pitchfork Media ranked Metal Box at #19 on their "Top 100 Albums of the 1980s,"[1], while In 2003, the album was ranked number 469 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time."

Southside Mural

This was my first attempt at making a panoramic photo. I took the pictures awhile back, but didn't get the film developed until just recently. No tripod + shoddy Photoshop work = greatness. not.

This is a mural behind a bank in southside Laredo. We had gone to pick up our guitarist just before Streetwise practice, and stopped at the bank right quick, and so i busted out the camera and snapped a few.

Hip-Hop All-Stars on Arsenio Hall

I don't really got a backstory for this, and to be honest, I was probably about 6 or so when this happened, but that doesn't remove from the fact that this is possibly one of the greatest videos in hip-hop history.

Shit's out of this world.

I hate Europe, sometimes...

So I just read that Doomriders will be invading Europe from late October until mid-November. Their tour kicks off in the UK with SSS and Tortuga for a week, and then the 'riders plan to decimate the rest of Europe in support of DISFEAR!

Europe has no idea what's about to happen. That tour is going to be epic.

Word is they're writing new material. Hopefully a new record gets announced soon. I'll keep my ears open for any news.

I only have one thing to say to the Doomriders...

TOUR THE UNITED FUCKING STATES!

Here's the dates for the Euro-tour:

10/26: Newport, UK @ TJ's w/ SSS, Tortuga
10/27: Plymouth, UK @ White Rabbit w/ SSS, Tortuga
10/28: Sheffield, UK @ Corporation w/ SSS, Tortuga

Blanco Weekend

Here are some pictures I took while I was at Blanco State Park in Blanco, TX this past weekend. I had fun over there. Sure the family bickering got annoying, but it's all part of being a family, is it not? Bubba joined us, as usual.

haha. He's one of the best dudes I know, and, like JuanJohn [another new contributor who has yet to post] and myself, this dude is a practitioner of Eternal Summer.

Energy cancels remainder of US Tour

A message from the band:
Due to reasons beyond our control, Energy had to cancel the remainder of our current U.S. Tour. Our drummer Justin developed tendonitis in his wrist, and after a visit to the Emergency Room, the doctor told him to not play drums for a month or so....and unfortunately, "a month or so" is all that was left of this tour.

We will still be playing the Dead Hearts last show on September 12th in Buffalo New York, but until then, Justin
has to let his wrist get better or he could be facing long term damage that would be far more detrimental to the bands future. We promise that within the next couple months we will make up for the places we missed out on playing because of all of this. Again we are sorry, but this is out of our hands.

Bummer.

Don't forget that they have the new song, "400," off the Race the Sun EP/Invasions of the Mind, available on their MySpace for your listening pleasure.

The Race the Sun EP will be out real soon [Sept. 2nd], with their debut full length, Invasions of the Mind, dropping on Bridge 9 Records on September 20th.

RIAA Takes on Muxtape.com

So apparently the RIAA decided to attack Muxtape.com, host for our newly added Weekly Muxtape Madness. Thus, there will be no new tape this week or next week or the one that follows. It all depends on how these legal issues get handled.

Taken from Punknews.org:
Popular "mixtape" sharing site, Muxtape, has been temporarily shut down due to some conflict with music industry trade organization, the RIAA. The website now displays this message:
Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.

The popular site allowed users to make and share mixtapes of MP3s - using their own music - and included fans in many bands and record labels. The trade organization spoke to Rolling Stone about the problems with muxtape:

For the past several months, we have communicated our legal concerns with the site and repeatedly tried to work with them to have illegal content taken down. Muxtape was hosting copies of copyrighted sound recordings without authorization from the copyright owners. Making these recordings available for streaming playback also requires authorization from the copyright owners. Muxtape has not obtained authorization from our member companies to host or stream copies of their sound recordings.

According to the article, for the site to obtain the rights to stream the music, it would need to set up a licensing arrangement with record labels. Rolling Stone also spoke to some legal experts about the issue, Fred Von Lohmann, Electronic Frontier Foundation’s senior intellectual property attorney noted:

I think they have a strong legal defense. The problem is if they might not have that money to go to court and take on the RIAA. But it’s a measure of success to be sued by the RIAA. Once you’re popular enough, that’s when they come calling.

Weak.

Dillinger Four - Civil War: Release Date Announced

Fat Wreck Chords has announced the new release date for the long awaited Dillinger Four CD/LP, Civil War...finally. October 14th, 2008 is the monumental day marked on every D4 lover's calender. Originally announced for release on Halloween of 2006, the record's release was postponed for whatever reason, but luckily, a date has finally been decided on. Get stoked.

Demolition Hammer - Skull Fracturing Nightmare Demo (1988)

By request, I upped this gem of east coast thrash/death metal. Skull Fracturing Nightmare was the first demo from Bronx thrashers, Demolition Hammer. Recorded in 1988, this demo featured drummer, John Salerno, who was replaced shortly after by Vinny Daze. With the addition of Daze and second guitarist, Derek Sykes, the band recorded a second demo tape, Necrology, in 1989. Personally, I love when thrash bands play as trios because the music will tend to be more raw and an overall assault on your eardrums. No extra rhythms; no whack solos; just fast and pissed off. Not saying a trio of thrashers can't do some mad innovative jams (Coroner's R.I.P. is one of my all-time favorite thrash metal records), but I much prefer my thrash to be straight forward and angry as hell.

Skull Fracturing Nightmare is 4 tracks of raging thrash metal. With lyrics about violence, death, and environmental disaster, how could you go wrong?

Weekly Muxtape Madness

Every week I will be compiling a new Muxtape that can be found on the sidebar. A Muxtape is essentially an online mixtape that you can make and share with your friends. There's a max limit of 12 songs, but it makes the song picking process more thought out, and thus makes for better Muxtapes, hopefully.

Currently, I have my "Eternal Burning Soul" Muxtape available. It's 9 tracks of some of my favorite Japanese Hardcore bands. Cheack that out!

Also, feel free to make your OWN Muxtape and post the link in a comment, or post ideas/themes for new Muxtapes, and maybe, I'll use your idea. I have a whole fuckton of music [19,256 Songs; 37.2 Days; 65.96GB according to iTunes. That's enough to make almost 1,605 different Muxtapes without using a song twice.], so Muxtapes might not be limited to just hardcore. I have a lot of metal, hip-hop, indie, amongst other things, so you're welcome to make suggestions of the non-hardcore variety.

Current Muxtape:

Thrash from the Heart was then...

Eternal Summer is now.

As you can see, the site has a new name. Not much has changed, but I just felt that Thrash from the Heart no longer encompassed my vision for this blog. The main purpose still remains to spread the hardcore reality in the modern day, and that will always be top priority.

Also, for those who have been trying to read past posts, the links in the navigation pages have been fixed, so feel free to go through all that as you see fit.

See you in October, Austin.

The Rev. White Devil speaks. (Fallcore 08)

As you can see from my previous post, the 8th annual Fallcore Fest will be happening on September 19th and 20th in Houston, TX. I got a hold of one of the fest's promoters, Daniel Truth, to get his two-cents about holding the events at Walter's this year as opposed to being at the Meridian, as the past two years of the fest have been.

This is what he had to say about that:
We're doing it at Walter's because Willow and I finally decided that doing it at the Meridian just makes it too stressful on us. There is too much overhead concerning the expenses for sound and venue rental for it to just be a fun show if it is at Meridian. In 2006 we had over 600 people pay, and so it actually worked out very well there, but we only had alittle over 400 pay in 2007, and because of that we weren't able to give bands what they truly deserved, and that left a sour taste in our mouth about doing it at Meridian. We have to worry so much about the money end of things there and it can potentially take away from the bands' and promoters' pockets. However, Walter's holds less than a third of the crowd that Meridian can hold, so we've had to cut the amount of bands playing down to accomodate that. I think a slightly smaller show in a tighter sized venue will yield a more memorable show anyway. I think Texas Hardcore has enough of a local following to create a pretty intense and intimate atmoshpere that Walter's has been providing for many years now. I think it is important to note that Walter's has been Houston's most steady hardcore-friendly venue for the past 5 or 6 years, even through all the adversity (financial and legal) that the club has faced in that time. The main point of this year's Fallcore is to just get back to the roots of what Texas Hardcore is about. Don't get me wrong, the last couple of years have been great, but Willow and I saw things kind of spiralling out of control in recent years. Each new year of the fest became a bigger and more expensive event to hold, so this year we're trimming the fat a little bit. Keep it simple, keep it fun.

Take Care,
Daniel

Missed Grownfest. Fallcore coming up.

So I had to miss out on this year's Grownfest due to people who were gonna be riding up to Houston with me bailing at the last minute. I heard good times were had. Pics and, hopefully, vids should be up soon enough.

People who were there: What's the word?

Albeit, I am def bummed about having missed out on Grownfest, the 8th annual Fallcore Texas Hardcore Fest will be happening Friday, September 19th and Saturday the 20th in Houston, TX at Walter's on Washington. Having opted for the smaller venue, in lieu of the larger venue where the fest took place these past couple of years, Meridian, this year's fest should be a rager.
